This is an amazing time in the Chicago area, if you are bored, you just aren’t trying or are a prisoner locked away in a dark room, which makes me wonder how are you reading this, instead of getting help for yourself? Or we can switch places, a couple of weeks locked in a dark room wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for me right now.
Anyway, the holiday spirit is everywhere and there are great options for you and your family that are either free or very inexpensive.
DAD found three completely different and fun activities that you can do with your kids to celebrate the holidays, and maybe even start some new traditions.
The Boundary (1932 W Division St.) makes it easy for the whole family to make some holiday memories. On December 17th the Wicker Park restaurant is throwing a Cookie Decorating Party. From 4:00PM-10:00PM guests can purchase cookies ($5 for 6) and decorate them with toppings that will be provided. The Boundary is offering family time hours from 4:00PM-6:00PM so make sure to come early with your little ones. Guests can also enjoy a FREE make-your-own candy apple bar that will be available the whole night. DAD’s listen up, they also have seasonal beers and rotating weekly food specials, beer!
The Redmoon Theater – Chicago’s theater ensemble known for large-scale spectacle – is preparing for its 15th annual Winter Pageant, a show running for two weekends Dec. 13-22. The show is different each year but always family-friendly. This year, there’s a cast of over 40 performers, including Indian dancers, belly dancers, high school-age dancers from The Happiness Club, an aerial acrobat, a Mexican Clown artist and a local rock band. Together, they’ll depict a story about a community of birds who struggle to regain their light during the cold months of winter.
This Saturday, Dec. 7 from noon to 2 pm, Redmoon will host its final “Open Access Builds” event where they invite anyone from the community to come into their Pilsen space (2120 S. Jefferson Street) to help build stuff for the Winter Pageant. People can paint sets, sew costumes (if they know how to sew), build masks and shadow puppets – there’s a lot of tasks they can lend a hand with. It’s fun way for the community to be involved in the production.
Dinkel’s Bakery a Chicago mainstay for over 90 years. Back for another year, Dinkel’s Bakery & Café (3329 N. Lincoln Ave.) presents story time by the fireplace with Norm Dinkel, Jr. as he reads his tale of the kind-hearted cow who saved Christmas: GrrGrr the Cow and the Snow on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 11th at 4pm.
GrrGrr the Cow was authored by Norm Dinkel, Jr.—third generation owner of Dinkel’s Bakery & Café—and the illustrations were done by his daughter, Sandgren Dinkel Karl. The story was inspired by a tale Dinkel would weave for his children each Christmas, and finally in 2007, he decided to put pen to paper in order to publish the book for others to enjoy with their families.
At the reading, guests will enjoy live holiday music and Dinkel’s treats including cookies, stollen, hot chocolate, and more by the fireplace in the café. Copies of GrrGrr the Cow will also be available in-store for purchase.
Free every day this month. My garage needs cleaning and painting. Please bring your own paint and brushes. Just wanted to make sure you were still paying attention.
