Ok, before you start to yell and call me all kinds if horrible names, I get what Jamie Moore is trying to do when she took pictures of her daughter dressed up like famous women from history. As a father of a girl, I have made it my life’s mission to show her positive images of women, from all aspects of life.
Whenever a positive woman author, athlete, cook or anything else is in town, we have always made it a point to go out and meet them, talk to them, learn from them. It’s vital to expose your kids, both male and female to positive healthy figures they can learn from.
One cool moment was when my daughter was 6, we were swimming at North Avenue Beach, this was right after the Olympics and the Pro Beach Volleyball thing was going on. As we played in the water, she pointed out the lady about ten feet from us “look daddy, she has words on her butt!” The word to be exact was “May.”
“That’s Misty May honey,” I explained. “We just saw her in the Olympics. “ Without hesitation my little girl walked past the photographers and autograph seekers right up to Misty May and said “My dad says girls can do anything boys can do.” Before she could finish May cut her off and finished the sentence “even better.” They both started to laugh and talk and before you knew it she was giving my daughter advice about sports and life. If a fresh water shark had swallowed me whole at that moment, I would have died proud.
OK, back to Jamie Moore and the pictures of her daughter. It’s a little weird. Like the Vegan Home Schooled kid, we know his parents are trying to do what’s best for him, but it’s a little weird. I thing it’s amazing that she put forth so much effort to show and teach her daughter about some of the most storied women in our history, but a little research would have been a good idea as well.
Jane Goodall– Amazing woman, has changed our perceptions of primates, people, and the connection between the two.
Helen Keller- Again amazing. Author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Susan B. Anthony-She’s on a coin. But beyond that she was an American civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in the 19th century women’s rights movement to introduce women’s suffrage into the United States.
Amelia Earhart– She was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record.
Coco Chanel- Bad Choice. Was Courtney Love too recent? A drug problem and a lover who was a Nazi spy, to be honest if I had to pick, I would rather have my daughter dress up like Ariel. (click here for proof).
If you’re going to go through the Herculean effort to do something this thoughtful, a fact check or two would be helpful. Steve Bartman must be a good guy, but when most people think of him, they think of one thing. You have a relationship with a Nazi spy and have a drug addiction, not sure if you’re the best role model for kids?
My son puts on a Bears helmet and runs around the yard and it’s fun to project what the future might be for him. Why not let your daughter dress up like Helen Keller or Jane Goodall, they are trail blazers.
I understand she is trying to show her daughter and other parents that there are better choices than a Disney Princess for Halloween, which is great! When my daughter got out of the “princess phase” I was so happy.
Moore is a professional photographer and why not use your kid as a model? We all love to take pictures of our kids. That being said, I write about my kids a lot, but also do my best to protect them and their identity as much as I can in a public forum. If my son wanted to dress up like Aaron Hernandez, he would be very disappointed in my reaction. Predicting the future comments that will follow this post once again proving there are a lot of angry people in the inter-webs.
Girls of every age could use the reminder that they can be smart, strong and beautiful, but to dress up your kid and share it with everyone on the internet, is that a person trying to teach a lesson? What happened to museums, books and movies?
