If you know anything about DAD then you know bacon is one of my favorite things, along with naps, the Squatty Potty and side boob. When I was given the opportunity to cover Bacon Fest it was something I couldn’t pass up.
I thought I knew all that I needed to know about bacon and the many ways to cook it up and serve it, come to find out, I have been blind to the masterful ways to serve up our delicious friend “bacon.”
Being a Bacon Fest “virgin” I envisioned a room full of gigantic guys in Super Bowl Shuffle shirts slathering down the swine as they raced to see who could get the meat sweats first. I was the guest of Bacon Fest veteran Dr. Aaron King, one of Chicago’s top pediatricians(if you’re looking). Since I don’t know any cardiologists, this was a good second choice.
While there were some big boys enjoying the meat of the Gods, Bacon Fest is everything you would expect from a Chicago event: fun, great music, nice atmosphere, people from all over the city and of course great, great food! Yes ladies, there is an equal amount of women as there are men. Bacon loves everyone.
More than 170 talented chefs served up delicious and creative bacon-inspired dishes to the bacon-loving crowd: Bacon cake(amazing), bacon tacos, bacon ice cream, bacon smoothies, bacon cupcakes, bacon dipped in blue cheese, bacon covered in chocolate, bacon and pasta, bacon and waffle sandwiches, bacon bloody Mary’s, bacon pate, fried bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon, bacon!
Everything tasted great! Everything! It’s like going to a Brazilian steak house, you’re going to leave full and satisfied, but you don’t eat a lot of any one thing.
It’s more than eating bacon, while we were eating, we were also helping The Greater Chicago Food Depository. Since Bacon Fest started in 2009, they have donated over $200,000 to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, which equates to 1 million meals!
This years event is sold out, however you can “save the event” for next year by going to their web site, you can also learn how to make a donation to the Greater Chicago Food Depository as well as check out the many restaurants who made Bacon Fest a success, they all have their tasty bacon treats on their menus.
As far as “winners” from this year, Velvet Taco and their #7 Taco and the Wit Hotel and their Bacon fritter thing they get DAD’s Golden Bacon award. Bacon Fest, put it on your calendar, wear comfy clothes and get ready for next year!
