I have three kids. I consider myself a seasoned DAD, there isn’t a lot that I haven’t been through (please don’t spite me for that statement, oh mighty spiter).
Anyway, as a veteran DAD, I am a part of a lot of dad’s groups, no play dates yet, but a lot of dads groups. I was hanging out with one particular group and the discussion of drinking breast milk broke out. At first I thought it was a joke, I am pretty sure most guys have taken a sip either by accident or out of curiosity, this was something different.
DAD #1- I do share in my wife’s breast milk, it makes me feel like I am a part of the process, she loves it and I appreciate her gift.
DAD#2- Totally, I love it and love being a part of it.
I had to make sure I was at a DAD’s group meeting and not a meeting of very masculine babies.
Then from around the table, more guys charmed it about their love of breast milk! For the first time in a long time, I had absolutely nothing to say, at first I sat and listened in horror, which eventually turned into self doubt.
Was I the freak? After fourteen years of fatherhood, was I doing it all wrong, did I owe my wife an apology for not offering to latch on or take a gulp.
Besides one incident where I drank out of a bottle in the fridge, I have been breastmilkless for almost two decades!
I did a little research and by research I mean Google search and found a story about a guy who claims his wife’s breast milk helped his erectile dysfunction. Before they have sex, he latches on for a little slurp of the good stuff and then they go at it.
I am not judging, but for me, latching on would be the source of my erectile dysfunction.
Before you all go La Leche League on me, I am not against breast feeding, though I am terrified of the breast pump. Why does it have to be clear and that noise, that horrible noise. If a guy designed it, it would have flames on the side, an MP3 player and some sort of remote control or light show.
What was I talking about? Right, I think breast feeding is great, natural and an amazing way for a woman to bond with her baby, blah, blah boilerplate stuff to keep you all from killing me. I do. It’s the part about men latching on or drinking from the bottle that I am unclear about.
Is this a good thing? Ladies help me here, is this something that you do or expect from your husband. Guys, now that the well has run dry did I miss out on something amazing, like when Springsteen was at Wrigley.
Help me here. Where do you stand on men breastfeeding? Is it something you do and enjoy?
