Sunday football returned to America and so did thousands of screaming, yelling fans.
One fan stands out above the rest, a seven year old “AJ” the Jets fan who was video taped by a family member taunting and yelling at complete strangers in the crowd. Some would say he was acting just like any other Jets fan, but at seven years old, is it too much.
Deadspin dubbed his video clip “This 7-year old Jets fan is an asshole,” and plenty of commenters agreed.
Which is worse, the behavior of the child in the video, the commenters or the family member who posted the video on YouTube without fuzzing out the face of the seven year old boy?
At one time or another I am pretty sure I have thought of using that adjective to describe my own kids, but to do it in pubic about another persons child, that’s a different story. I wouldn’t even do that to the douchey dad down the street.
I took my son to his first Bears game with the instructions of “ you can yell and scream and even throw peanut shells on the floor. Here it’s OK to boo the other guys.” At first he was hesitant, but by the middle of the second quarter he was yelling “you poop heads!” To the other team.
We are Michigan fans, we live across from Ohio State fans, while we give each other a hard time, I make sure my kids see that it is in jest and never mean spirited or disrespectful. Odds are AJ wasn’t born with a potty mouth, right or wrong, this behavior was learned or taught and young AJ is now at the top of the class for crass behavior at a football game. Not the kid you would want to go against in dodgeball! “In your face you loser!”
So where do you stand, who is the biggest A-hole: AJ, the commenters, the family member who put the video on YouTube or all of the above? Where do you stand on letting your kids yell at sporting events?
Below is a gallery of some of the comments left on YouTube and Deadspin about young AJ.
Hey!!!! Remember to “Like” Dad All Day on Facebook. I am just neurotic enough to take it personally. If you don’t, I will send the douchey dad down the street to your house to talk about cars and plaid shorts!
