If you’re on social media you may have noticed a sudden push by dads to have Amazon change the name of the Amazon Mom program to Amazon Family. #AmazonFamily is you’re looking for it.
There’s a petition you can sign online by clicking here and share a bunch of stuff to show your support by cicking here or linking to the National At-Home Dad Network on Facebook.
I applaud this movement more importantly, I support the fact that stay at home dads are finally saying something that has backbone and merit to their message.
If you read enough stay at home dad blogs or watch their stories on the news, the message is generally the same “ We are not babysitters, we can take care of our kids, we are parents just like the moms….blah, blah, blah, blah.”
These are usually followed up by stay at home dad lists: Top 10 things you should know as a stay at home dad, Top 10 things stay at home dads need to know, Top 10 things I learned as a stay at home dad…blah, blah, blah, blah.
Generally the message from these groups is whiney, repetitive and quite frankly weak.
I have friends who are gay, many, as a matter of fact. Back in the day, they used to yell “Were here, were queer and were not going anywhere!!!” My response was always “cool, but what are you going to do next?” Besides yelling, what are you going to do to change the world and make it better as a whole?
Despite a massive and constant struggle, the gay community continues to work towards equality, a better understanding of the world, arts, science, politics and more. Bravo!
Historically, minority groups have joined together to change the world, for themselves and all of us, now finally stay at home dads are saying something that matters, even if it’s just a little bit.
Having been a stay at home dad, I understand what it feels like to show up to “mommy and me swim class, mommy and me yoga, mommy and me playgroups etc.” You are the minority and it is uncomfortable.
So, yes, getting Amazon to change the name of their “Mom program” to the “family program” may seem silly and small, for a group of guys who have dedicated their lives to taking care of their families, it’s as big as having just one drinking fountain for every colored person, not just white.
A stay at home daddy blogger recently accused me of not liking stay at home dads. Nothing could be further from the truth. What I don’t like is guys who will sell their message and belief system for soap, diapers, Lego’s, Nerf a Kia, a man bag or any other brand that blows in and gives them a free sample or a gift card. They are more transparent than…something that’s pretty transparent_________ add example back there.
Point is these men have finally stepped up with a united voice that doesn’t have to do with selling a book of poems or a convention full of hugs and I applaud and support that and ask that you take a few seconds, (cuz’ that’s how long it takes) to support them.
